I attended the recent green keeper (Saltex) show at Windsor. We were treated to a skills update on all sorts of topics but the autumn renovation process was covered in great detail.
I have written a sequence of short articles on this and posted them on our Turfandstuff site. These include some new snippets gleaned from the show.
There is an outline article on Autumn Lawn Renovation where I try to explain some of the reasons why it is required and why autumn is the best time.
Then we go into each of the processes in more detail.
It starts with Lawn Scarifying including hints and tips on how to carry this out correctly.
We then move onto the topic of hollow tining. This is a very time consuming job when done manually but if you hire in a machine, it can be amazingly successful. Just imagine that you are trying to let your lawn "breathe".
We then discuss in more detail the reasoning behind top dressing. Be assured that all the lawns, greens and pitches you admire have a top dressing policy. (Top dressing is also known as Lawn or Turf dressing.) Top dressing also gives the correct surface for the final part of the jigsaw, the "over seeding".
Over seeding is the process of continually improving your grass population in your favour. If you purchase your top dressing from TurfandStuff, we throw in a bag of quality grass seed absolutely free.
One factor discussed at Saltex was the problem of top dressing "matching" your rootzone. This is an important issue, especially when heavy rates of top dressing are applied. If you are concerned about this, then deep hollow tining is the best way to "key" the rootzone to the top dressing. Remember that our Top dressing is designed to match our Rootzone product.
